American History Curriculums for Upper Elementary Homeschool Students

American History is an important subject, and one not to be taken too lightly. When it comes to finding a homeschool American History curriculum for your fourth to fifth grader there are so many curriculums to choose from it can be overwhelming. Here are some great curriculum choices for upper elementary American History.

Homeschool in the Woods Time Travelers History Series

The Time Travelers History Series is a favorite American History curriculum of many homeschooling families.

The Time Travelers series consists of five different books, New World Explorers, Colonial Life, The American Revolution, The Early 19th Century, and The Civil War. Each book contains lots of learning activities including creative writing exercises, cooking recipes, file folder games, science experiments, notebook timeline, lapbook projects, notebooking activities, and copywork pages. In addition to the activities a one-page lesson plan is included, as well as list of additional resources that include websites, movie suggestions, and books.

Each book in the series costs $28.95 and can be purchased directly from the Homeschool in the Woods website.

A Child’s Story of America

A Child’s Story of America is quite controversial as an American History Curriculum, you either love it or you hate it. This curriculum is recommended by Cathy Duffy, author of the book 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum who compares A Child’s Story of America to V.M Hillyer’s book A Child’s Story of the World.

It is written in a gentle narrative tone. The book does have a Christian slant, although many Christians themselves state it is more than just a slant, it is written in accordance with the theology of the Reformed Church.

This is a good curriculum if your religious views align with the views put forth in this curriculum. I highly suggest buying a cheap used copy or borrowing a friend’s copy to see if you will be able to use it before you buy it yourself.

A Child’s Story of America is published by Christian Liberty Press, and is listed in their catalog for $10.99.
