How do you go about deciding which of the homeschooling programs is right for your child? There are so many choices to choose from. So how do you decide? The task is not as difficult as it might seem at first. Here are some simple things you can do to move from indecision to decision.
First, take a survey of your child. What does your child like? What interests him/her? Is she computer literate? Can he navigate his way around the Internet? How disciplined is your child? What is your goal for your child’s education? Do you want your child to have a religious or secular instruction?
As you work through these initial questions, you will begin to eliminate certain homeschooling programs. If you are interested in a religion based program then right away you have eliminated a lot of secular schools. If your child is not Internet savvy or you do not feel comfortable presently allowing your child to be on the Internet then you can eliminate programs which deliver their instruction via the web. How much time do you have available to teach your child each day? How competent are you in the various subjects which will have to be taught? You might want to focus on a homeschooling school where you are not the sole teacher of your child and where you can also get some help on administrative chores.
See you are almost at the moment of decision. Now you would want to test drive a few programs which are still in the running. Do not forget to also let your child take part in working through the material to see how the two of them get alone together. Consider the price and whether there are payment plans. If you have settled on a school rather than just a curriculum provider, be sure that the school has the proper accreditation. Check with your state board of education if you are not sure. Now, you are ready to decide.
